SEO » Tools » Free SEO tools

This guide covers what I consider to be the best free SEO tools in 2024.

You can find free SEO tools for various needs, from keyword research to backlink analysis.

It is worth noting that free SEO Tools can help an SEO beginner get started and go a long way toward building SEO skills, but they all have limitations that will become obvious once you start learning SEO.

The ideal path for an SEO beginner is to use free tools as much as possible until they feel they are hitting too many walls.

Once you have used free tools enough time to understand their usefulness and bump into any of their limitations you may decide to invest in a ‘SEO Suite’ paid tool that gives you access to a range of different tools for every stage of the campaign: research, analysis, targeting, tracking, optimization, audits…, and from there scale up to more sophisticated premium tools.

If you are a complete beginner and are starting to build a website from scratch, you should take into account that many of the available SEO tools provided for free, e.g., GSC, GA, Ahrefs, will be useless to you. Why? Because your website will probably not rank for any keyword at all, you will see almost no data or very poor data in those tools.

You will only start seeing actionable data in those tools once you have at least 10 to 20 pieces of content on your site. The more content on the site you manage, the more useful the free tools will be to you.

Each of these tools offers unique features to address various SEO needs, from keyword research to content generation and site audits. Here’s a closer look at what makes each tool stand out.

Website Analysis Tools

Google Webmaster Tools

Pros:

  • User-friendly interface
  • Comprehensive data on impressions, clicks, and average position
  • Integration with other marketing tools

Cons:

  • Requires verification of website ownership
  • Limited to Google’s search results

Google Search Console is indispensable to understand how Google views your website, your current levels of search engine visibility, indexation levels.

It covers everything from monitoring search traffic to identifying technical SEO issues, making it suitable for users of all skill levels.

Key features include tracking performance data for your website content on Google:

  • impressions (no. of times your website is visible for specific keywords)
  • clicks (no. of times people click on your results in the Google SERPs)
  • average position for your web pages in Google’s search results.

Google Search Console integrates seamlessly with other marketing tools via their API, offering a holistic view of your digital marketing efforts.

Although it requires verification of website ownership to access sensitive data, this minor inconvenience is outweighed by the valuable insights it provides, including data from Google Analytics.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools – Free Website audit tool

ahr-section

Ahrefs is a premium tool, but they offer free full access to their valuable Site Audit tool if you can validate your website and grant them access to your Google Search Console data. The trade-off is, of course, access to your website data. You make it available to them, and they will give you great tech SEO insights in return.

Pros:

  • Full access to the Webmaster tool: Site Audit
  • Visual GUI into your websites crawling or code issues
  • it’s like GSC in steroids
  • website performance insights

Cons:

  • Can be complex for beginners
  • Limited to access to the other tools (backlinks) with a free subscription

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools excels in advanced website crawl analysis, making it a favorite for SEO professionals focused on SEO Audits.

Market Insights and Competitor Analysis

Google Trends – Best for Market Insights

Price: Free

Pros:

  • Real-time data on keyword search frequency
  • User-friendly dashboard with customizable filters
  • Versatile for a wide range of topics

Cons:

  • Limited in-depth analysis compared to specialized SEO tools

Google Trends aids in market insights by offering real-time data on keyword search frequencies, enabling users to analyze the popularity of terms over time. This helps businesses identify trends and make informed decisions.

Its user-friendly dashboard and customizable filters make it accessible across various industries. Whether tracking search term popularity over time or identifying emerging trends, Google Trends supports a wide range of topics, including the target keyword.

However, while it offers excellent broad insights, it may lack the depth of analysis that more specialized SEO tools provide. Despite this, its ability to deliver timely and relevant market insights makes it an essential tool for any digital marketer.

Bing Webmaster Tools – Add-on to Google search Console

Price: Free

  • Free access to features for website optimization.
  • Effective for targeting Bing’s distinct audience.

Cons:

  • Less user-friendly compared to Google tools
  • Smaller user base compared to Google

Bing Webmaster Tools provides a viable alternative to Google’s suite, offering similar functionalities for managing and optimizing website performance. It’s particularly beneficial for targeting Bing’s distinct audience, an often untapped resource. The tool includes performance monitoring and technical SEO features at no cost.

However, users often find Bing Webmaster Tools less intuitive compared to Google’s offerings, which can pose challenges for those new to SEO. Despite its smaller user base, the insights it provides can be crucial for a more diversified SEO strategy.

  • Customizable reports

Cons:

  • Complex for beginners
  • Limited free version (up to just 500 URLs)

Screaming Frog SEO Crawler is renowned for its thorough site auditing capabilities, making it indispensable for identifying technical SEO issues. It excels in crawling websites and providing detailed, customizable reports. This level of detail is particularly beneficial for SEO consultants and professionals optimizing large websites.

The main drawbacks are its complexity, which can be daunting for beginners, and its limited free version, which caps the number of URLs that can be audited. Nevertheless, its comprehensive auditing features make it a top choice for those serious about technical SEO.

Keyword research and analysis Tools

Google Ads Planner – Best for Keyword Research

Price: Free

Pros:

  • Precise keyword data

Cons:

  • Oriented towards PPC marketing
  • Requires a Google Ads account for access

Google Ads Planner is powerful for keyword research, especially for PPC campaigns. Its seamless integration with Google Ads allows easy access to keyword insights, valuable for both SEO and PPC strategies. The tool provides precise keyword data, helping identify the best keywords for campaigns, including the Google Keyword Planner.

However, it requires a Google Ads account for access, which might be a barrier for some. While it’s primarily oriented towards PPC marketing, its keyword research capabilities are robust enough to benefit SEO efforts as well.

Ubersuggest is a favorite among budget-conscious users seeking a reliable keyword research tool. The Pro version, priced at $29 per month, is accessible for small to medium-sized websites. Its visually appealing, easy-to-navigate interface is particularly beginner-friendly.

However, some users have reported inconsistent data accuracy, which can be a drawback for high-stakes campaigns. Despite its limitations, Ubersuggest remains a solid choice for those looking to get the most value out of a low-budget SEO tool.

Competitor analysis

SEO Quake – great for a Browser-based SEO Tool

Its compatibility with major browsers and ease of use make it a convenient tool for digital marketers. The SEObar and SERP overlay features offer immediate access to key SEO metrics, enhancing user efficiency.

While the user interface is straightforward, some users might find the amount of data presented overwhelming. Additionally, SEO Quake is criticized for its limited depth in analysis compared to more comprehensive SEO tools. On-page and content SEO tools

Chat GPT – great for AI-driven Insights

Price: Free

Pros:

  • Versatile for various writing tasks
  • Useful for generating content ideas and drafts

Cons:

  • Effectiveness depends on the clarity of prompts

Chat GPT is a versatile tool capable of generating human-like text, making it a powerful asset for various writing tasks. Users find Chat GPT incredibly useful for assisting creative processes, from content ideas to drafting articles. Its ability to generate flexible, human-like text sets it apart from other content-generation tools.

The effectiveness of Chat GPT largely depends on the clarity of the prompts given by the user. While this requires some learning curve, the tool’s versatility and capabilities in content generation make it a standout choice for AI-driven insights. I strongly recommend not to rely on LLMs like ChatGPT as your sole source of website content. Every piece of content should be proofchecked, facts validated, and used only as a starting point in your writing.

How to Choose the Right Free SEO Tool

Selecting the right SEO tool can be daunting, but understanding your specific needs and goals simplifies the process.

Start by identifying your business goals and the areas where you need the most help. Are you looking to improve keyword research, establish an editorial plan, or just get some on-page or technical SEO insights? Different tools offer different features aimed at these specific goals.

Consider your technical expertise as well. Some tools, like Screaming Frog SEO Crawler, require a more advanced understanding of SEO, which might be overwhelming for beginners. On the other hand, tools like Google Webmaster Tools or Google Trends are designed to be accessible for users of all skill levels.

Budget is another crucial factor. While many tools mentioned are free, some offer advanced features at a cost. Balancing cost against capabilities is essential to ensure the best value for your investment. Tools like Ubersuggest offer affordable pro versions with additional features without breaking the bank.

Integrating multiple tools provides a more rounded understanding of your website’s SEO performance. For instance, using both Bing and Google Webmaster Tools helps you optimize for different search engines. Combining insights from various tools will enhance your overall knowledge and SEO strategy.

Summary

From Google Webmaster Tools to Chat GPT, each of these free SEO tools offers unique features that cater to different aspects of SEO. They can help you optimize your website, improve your website visibility, and learn SEO in the process. My list is only a fraction of the number of existing SEO Tools you may get on the internet. Do your own research, go and participate in SEO Conferences and speak to like-minded professionals at events, and you will find plenty of other free tools to help you get better at SEO.
